Fall Sensory Pies

If your kids like to mix up ingredients as much as mine do, they will love this fun and educational activity. We love making pies, sensory style, especially in the fall! We do this activity every single year because my kids love it so much. Check out last year’s apple pie play here.

As my kids get older, we continue to add to the details and complexity. My kids are now 5 and 7, so I wanted to include more kinds of pie, with different ingredients and some recipes with higher numbers to support their math development. Since I couldn’t find the printable recipes I was looking for online, I made some of my own. If you think they’d be useful for you and your family, you are welcome to download them here for free (Apple, Pumpkin, Blueberry, Pecan & Sugar).

For our baking ingredients we used

For the fruits, nuts and other ingredients, I have a few resin pieces of each ingredient, but not enough for all the recipes. I supplemented the pieces I had with coloured and painted pasta.

  • coloured pasta for apple, pumpkin, pecans and butter (Note: this pasta came in these colours – it’s a coloured pasta mix from Bulk Barn)
  • Blueberry Pearls from The Creative Mix Shop (*affiliate link)
  • white painted pasta for sugar

This activity is a great way to practice counting and recipe reading, but also is just a fun invitation to sink little hands into some different textures.
